Announcing keynote Lisa Strausfeld!

We are super-excited to announce another great keynote for the Interaction 11 conference: Lisa Strausfeld, a partner at Pentagram! Lisa’s work is at the center of design, information, visualization and space; her work is visually stunning and technically brilliant. In addition to many other awards and honors, Lisa was selected as one of Fast Company’s “Masters of Design” in 2009 and received the National Design Award in the category of Interaction Design in 2010.

Lisa joins an already phenomenal line-up of keynote speakers for what is sure to be the interaction design event of the year. Have you bought your tickets yet? We’ve sold out in the past – you’ll probably want to get a jump on that!

Announcing keynote Erik Hersman!

We’re thrilled to announce our fifth keynote, Erik Hersman. Erik is the co-founder of Ushahidi (which means “testimony” in Swahili), a web application created to map the reported incidents of violence happening during the post-election crisis in Kenya. Currently, he is working with a team of mostly-African programmers to continue development of this new free and open source platform that makes it easier to crowdsource crisis information and visualize data. Ushahidi has been used for disasters in Haiti and Chile, by media organizations such as Al Jazeera and the Washington Post, for election monitoring in India, Afghanistan, Namibia and Mexico, and for multiple other uses around the world.

Erik, who just enjoyed a great profile in Fast Company, joins our other great keynotes. The conference looks to be pretty great – have you registered yet?!

Visualizing IxDA’s Lightning Sessions

Here’s a quick Wordle visualization of IxDA’s lightning session submissions from this year – all 65,000 words, visualized. Gives a nice representation of our professional aspirations, I think – print it and give it to your boss? :)

Announcing keynotes Bruce Sterling and Richard Buchanan!

We are incredibly pleased to announce our next two invited keynote speakers, both of whom have been pivotal in defining the course of our profession. Bruce Sterling is an author, journalist, editor, and critic whose nonfiction works include The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier (1992), Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next Fifty Years (2003), and Shaping Things (2005). Richard Buchanan is a professor of Design, Management, and Information Systems at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. Prior to joining the Weatherhead faculty in 2008, he served Carnegie Mellon University first as Head of the School of Design (1992-2002) and then as Director of Doctoral Studies (2002-2008), during which time he inaugurated Interaction Design programs at the Masters and Doctorate level.

With this blockbuster announcement and community submissions from all over the globe, Interaction11 is once again shaping up as the conference of the year. Register today!

Call for Participation closes Sunday August 1 at 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time

We are seeing an astounding and prolific influx of community submissions — particularly as the deadline approaches. (Excellent work, all you wicked procrastinators.) That said, it came to our attention this evening that there is some confusion about the actual cut-off time: July 31 or August 1? Both dates were in our multi-channel communications. Since IxDA is a global community based on individual initiative (however late-breaking it may be) we will close the Call for Participation Sunday, August 1 at 11:59 PM U.S. Eastern Time. Thank you for your enthusiastic participation!

Interaction11 – Call For Participation Ending Soon!

Interaction11’s Call for Participation will be closing at the end of the week this Saturday, July 31st, at 11:59 p.m. EST. We’ve already received a healthy number of topic submissions from the well-prepared, highly-organized, and consistently punctual individuals, but we know there’s also a significant contingency of last-minuteists out there who need reminders and gentle prods before they finally make time to submit. If you’re part of that latter group, this message is for you — put the procrastination on the back burner for an hour or so and write up your idea for a workshop, lightning round, or activity.

Announcing keynotes Brenda Laurel and Jason Bruges

At last, we can start spilling the beans! We are very pleased to announce the first two of seven invited keynote speakers: Brenda Laurel and Jason Bruges. Brenda is a designer, researcher and writer whose 25-year career has focused on interactive narrative, human-computer interaction, and cultural aspects of technology. She currently serves as chair of the new Graduate Program in Design at California College of the Arts. Jason is the founder of Jason Bruges Studio, a London-based firm creating interactive spaces and surfaces that sit between the worlds of architecture, interaction design and site-specific installation art. His projects range from large-scale building facades and public art to interactive interior environments and products. So, wow, have you registered yet? Are you working on your submission to our call for participation? Go for it…just 30 days until the August 1 deadline. We want to hear from you!
